Major Hans Assi Hahn: The Man & His Machines
A fascinating study of one of the Luftwaffe's leading fighter pilots "Assi" Hahn, by Jerry Crandall, illustrated by Thomas A. Tullis. Through personal interviews from those who knew Assi, from private correspondence and articles about one of the first Knight's Cross holders and 175 photos plus original stills from original colour film, the story of Assi Hahn is told.
This is the most comprehensive study of Assi Hahn, the man and his machines. Rare, unpublished images of his various aircraft, totalling 12 in all with full colour profiles, colour notes and scrap views are also included.
Previously unpublished photos and full colour profiles of aircraft flown by Siegfried Schnell, Walter Oesau, Josef Puchinger, Egon Mayer, Kurt Knappe, all fellow JG 2 "Richthofen" pilots are also included.
"Assi Hahn as a person was a man with absolutely the greatest influence on human beings that I ever knew...he was excellent, had a fabulous memory and a great ability to comprehend any situation. He wouldn't do anything else than what he felt but he was an excellent soldier...he was a born leader and he showed it. Later when we became fighter pilots, Assi was a natural...he always saw the British Spitfires first...I don't recall him ever loosing a plane while he was in the air with us. Assi was a leader who flew, not a guy who was sitting down on the ground sending the others up."
