Hailed as the 'literary discovery of the war', this was understandably popular at the time of publication and remains a fascinating contemporary account of soldiering in the heart of the action. A most vivid, moving, horrible and yet glorious book of the British & Allies fighting in France leading to Dunkirk. This book was published under World War II rationing restrictions and was written by a contemporary witness, using a nom de plume (or a nom de guerre). We now understand the identity of the author to be John Austin.
