The author served on Earl Haig's staff in WWI, and later attended the Peace Conference in Paris. Between the wars he served in Berlin in Military Intelligence, India, and Egypt. He witnessed the defeat of France in 1940, served in North Africa, and was later attached to SOE. He assesses the relative merits of Wavell, Auchinleck and Montgomery, and gives an authentic first-hand account of of de Gaulle's reaction to Lady Spear's ambulance at the Victory Parade.
