Uniforms of the American Revolution
This volume in the Blandford Colour Series makes a timely appearance for the bicentenary of the Declaration of Independence of 1776. In a series of magnificent full-colour illustrations, it covers the principal army and naval uniforms of the American, British, German and French armies which took part, and it includes plates of the Indian dress of the period. They provide a unique and colourful survey of one of the great epochs of military history. The uniforms of the British, German, and French troops, on the whole, conform to the regulations. The study of American uniforms, however, both revolutionary and loyalist, is more difficult because of the chaotic conditions existing at the time and the lack of contemporary evidence. What information exists is extremely fragmentary, and the author and artist have relied on advertisements for deserters in contemporary American newspapers and additional sources, which include the latest American research on the subject.
In an attempt to avoid making the figures in this book look too modern, they have been deliberately stylised, and contemporary paintings, drawings and prints have been used wherever possible. Apart from the uniforms, which are arranged as far as possible by campaigns, additional plates give details of flags, head-dress and weapons. There is an introductory section covering the war and the organisation of the various armies, and there are extended captions to the plates which provide additional information. John Mollo is a well-known expert on military dress and author and illustrator of several books on the subject. He also works in the film industry, where he has advised on authenticity and has supervised the design and manufacture of the uniforms for such films as The Charge of the Light Brigade, The Adventures of Gerard. Nicholas and Alexandra, Bequest to the Nation. and Stanley Kubrick's version of Thackeray's Barry Lyndon. Malcolm McGregor's illustrations for Bland-ford's Army Uniforms of World War 2 have evinced high praise, and in this latest volume he has again based many of his paintings on actual people of the period.
