Augsburg's Last Eagles: Colors, Markings and Variants of the Messerschmitt Bf 109

 

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was built in greater numbers than any other aircraft of WWII, with the exception of the Soviet Russian Il-2 Stormovik. Even given the specific focus on the last year of the war, this book does not pretend to exhaustively cover all of the developmental issues, variations, colour schemes, and markings applied to the Augsburg Eagle during this chaotic period. Instead, background information and descriptions of colour schemes in use up to 1945 are presented, wartime photos illustrate these schemes and some unusual variations; colour profiles bring these schemes to life; scale drawings and a detailed examination of the oft misunderstood conformal cowel found on the final variants of the BF 109 are also given.

These elements are combined to generate a concise but colourful summary of the camouflage, markings, and variants of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 from June 1944 to May 1945.
