Darkness Shall Cover Me: Night Bombing Over the Western Front, 1918
Darkness Shall Cover Me is the true story of 2/Lt Leslie Blacking, a nineteen-year old pilot sent to serve with 207 Squadron on the Western Front during the summer of 1918. His task was to fly Handley Page 0/400 night bombers from Ligescourt in Picardy on raids behind the German lines. Blacking was the newest and youngest pilot on the squadron, but flew his share of operations, on which he developed a close bond with his two crew members, observer George Harrison and gunner Sergeant Pilcher. Flying their cumbersome aircraft with only the most primitive of instruments, they performed several hair-raising missions together. Remarkably, however, while only too well aware of his own short life expectancy, Blacking was still able to spare a thought for the men in the trenches, whose precarious existence in the mud and filth was far removed from the warmth and comparative safety of the Officers' Mess. He, too, longed for an end to the conflict. This is a lucidly written, often moving, account of one man's experiences over that infamous battle front. It is also a tale of the courage which was fostered by the extraordinary camaraderie and team spirit which prevailed in those days of terrible adversity.
