Johns was a naval officer when he was recruited into the SIS shortly before the outbreak of war. He headed the SIS in Lisbon in 1941 and as well as gathering and disseminating information, he worked with escape line organisers. After an abortive mission in South America he returned to London to join SOE where he became head of the Belgian Section and later headed the Dutch section also.
