Illustrated History of the Vietnam War
This slick, glossy picture book is held together with an equally slick and readable, if superficial, text. The combination produces an effect very like a television special: long on images, short on depth. It is an excellent compendium of the most familiar photosa burning monk, General Loan killing a prisoner during Tet, the screaming girl running naked from a napalm attack as well as many other quite striking if less famous shots. The text is clearly secondary but is generally a straightforward chronicle that shows none of the main participants in a particularly good light. Its looks and its easy summoning of bitter memory make this suitable for general collections.
