The British Grenadiers 350 Years of the First Regiment of Foot Guards 1656-2006
The Grenadier Guards is one of the British Army’s oldest and most famous regiments, with a distinguished history of action in every major British conflict and many minor ones. Through beautiful colour images, this stirring tribute pays homage to the Grenadiers in their 350th anniversary year.
Formed in 1656 by Charles II as ‘The First Regiment of Foot Guards’, the Grenadiers were renamed as ‘The First or Grenadier Regiment of Foot Guards’, in honour of their defeat of The Grenadiers of The French Imperial Guard at Waterloo. Their combat record spans from Tangier in 1680 to the 1991 Gulf War. The Regiment has been awarded 78 Honorary Distinctions during its long history but has fought in many more battles.
Throughout this time it has continued its traditional and privileged task of mounting guard over the sovereign. Henry Hanning’s expert account contains full details of the Regiment’s battle honours, key personalities, Victoria Cross winners, customs and ceremonial role over its illustrious existence.
