The Siege of Québec and the Campaigns in North America 1757 - 1760
This attractive Folio publication, complete in its slipcase, details the history of the Siege of Quebec and the campaigns in North America during the period 1757 - 1760. In June 1759 the city of Quebec was besieged by British troops under General Woolfe and assisted by a fleet of 22 ships of war under Admiral Saunders. Numerically weak, Woolfe was defeated by General Montcalm on July 31st but on September 13th, having landed on the Plains of Abraham above Quebec, he met and defeated the French who evacuated the place on the 17th. The city surrendered the following day. Still caught up in the Seven Year's War the following May, and having defeated General Murray, General de Levis laid siege to Quebec but to little effect owing to the superiority of the garrison's artillery. On May 16, 1760, a small British squadron attacked and destroyed the French ships carrying de Levis's supplies and reserve of ammunition, so he hastily raised the siege but left behind 40 siege guns and all his sick and wounded. The Battle of Quebec was important in that it decided the future of Canada.
