Patton's Third Army at War
This is the story of the triumphal progess of General George S. Pattons magnificent Third Army across Nazi-occupied Europe and into Hitlers redoubt in the last year of World War II. Their actions in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Czechoslovakia and Austria gave a new dimension to the term fluid warfare. They only needed one general order - to seek out the enemy, trap and destroy him. This they did, driving on in fair weather and foul, across good going and bad. Their story is one of team work, or armour, infantry and aircraft, working together with a perfection that even amazed the Germans, who had always considered themselves as the masters of the Blitzkrieg. It is also the story of a triumph of administration as thousands of trucks carried forward the supplies so vital to keep an Army of that size moving and fighting. It is the story of American ingenuity, of meeting every challenge with new battle winning ideas. But above all it is the story of American soldiers, those in the front line, those behind who kept them fighting and those above who did the planning and issued the orders. Much of their greatness, their driving force, their will to win, owed to one man, their commander - General George Smith Patton, Junior - and in consequence a section of the book has been devoted to him alone.
