New 2008 revised and updated edition - limited print run - available now. The first printing in 2000 was limited to only 1,000 copies. This second printing is only 500 copies.
This profusely illustrated, A4 hardbound publication, features the deeds and actions of the New Zealanders in the Long Range Desert Group in World War II. The book contains a stunning collection of previously unpublished photographs taken by the men themselves. This unique pictorial record features images of the men during operations, providing a vivid insight into the lives of desert soldiers. The author, Brendan O'Carrol, after spending a number of years researching and interviewing veterans, gaining unique access to some of the men's diaries, provides a full description of the uniforms, as well as the battles and the conditions under which the men fought. Containing stunning photographs, many taken behind enemy lines by the men of the LRDG themselves, this book has become the definitive work on the New Zealanders who fought in the deserts of North Africa and beyond and whose tactics were adopted and developed by David Stirling and the fledgling SAS. Field Marshal Rommel once declared that the "Long Range Desert Group did more damage than any other unit of their size" and, as it was men of the New Zealand Army that made up the majority of the unit.
This reprinted verison has a fully updated list of LRDG members and a rewritten chapter on the assault on Levita.
