Barbarossa: The German Campaign in Russia - Planning and Operations (1940-1942)

 

The purpose of this book is to describe German planning and operations in the first part of the campaign against Russia. The narrative starts with Hitler's initial plans for an invasion of Russia and ends at the time of Germany's maximum territorial gains during the battle of Stalingrad.

 

The initial part of the book deals with the strategic planning for Barbarossa, and details the different plans that were made (the Marcks plan, the OKH plan and the actual plan).
Part two deals with the operations in 1941, meaning the opening moves in June and July; the operations in August; operations in September/October and the operation to seize Moscow).
Part three is about events in 1942 and it describes the Soviet counter attack in December, January and February, but also German planning effort for a renewal of the attack in 1942 during the winter, and the final plans for the summer offensive. Next up is a description of the actual offensive in 1942. This section consists of the early phases (June and early July) and events in July where Stalingrad becomes the main objective. Part three concludes with a critical analyses of the German effort in 1942.
