Dancing in the Skies
This is an account of the career of Tony Jonsson, the only Icelander to fly with the RAF during World War II. Enlisting at Padgate in 1940, he was posted to 17 Squadron at Elgin where he flew Hurricanes and then in September 1941 moved to 111 Squadron at North Weald. It was here that Jonsson began his diverse and exciting Spitfire operations, initially on day-fire offensives and night-fire duties, and then on Operation Torch and with the crucial action in North Africa. An upright, impressive and often humorous account of the only Icelander (mother was English) to fly with the RAF during WWII. Jonsson provides the reader with interesting insights throughout to include his childhood impressions of Iceland in the 1920s and 30s, entrance into the RAF and training for combat. His first hand accounts of fighting in North Africa and France from 1941-45 include details of life in a fighter squadron, coping with the loss of friends killed in action, air to air combat, liberty excursions with his mates, etc. Jonsson finds the means to seed the book with humor despite the cruel nature of war and many lost friends.
