The 153 Gurkha Parachute Battalion , was raised in 1942 in India as a part of the 50th Indian Parachute Brigade and after training was commited during the 1944 Japanese offensive against Imphal on the Indian - Burma border . They particularly distinguished themselves in the defence of Sangshak to the East of Imphal , and later at Imphal itself. In 1945 they participated in the capture of Rangoon during operation " Dracula '' . The author was a medical officer in the unit.
