Uniforms of the German Soldier traces the evolution of the German Army uniform, from 1870 through to the end of the First World War. Through the use of more than 300 black-and-white and more than 30 colour photographs, this book giving the reader an unparalleled analysis. Each photograph is accompanied with a detailed caption, explaining interesting aspects of the soldier’s uniform, insignia and equipment.

Imperial Germany was at its zenith towards the end of the nineteenth century, and it possessed colonies throughout Africa, Asia and South America. Uniforms of the German Soldier illustrates these different uniforms and equipment, and demonstrates how the regimentals of the native troops contrasted with those of the Imperial Army. The author also examines one of the innovations of this period, the spiked helmet (pickelhaube), which came to symbolise the German Army in the First World War.
