There had been ‘grandoise predictions’ of swift victory – the result of the American landings in North Africa. The troops coming ashore gained an easy triumph because they met half-hearted opposition from French soldiers caught in an agonizing dilemma between duty and desire, but in their exultion they overlooked the reason for their quick success.
