From an initial strength of 18,000 Germans in 1939 the Waffen SS grew to over 900,000 by the end of 1944. There was a total of 38 Waffen SS divisions including 7 Panzer, 8 Panzergrenadier, 16 Infantry divisions and 6 Mountain Divisions. Originally volunteers were only drawn from German nationals. Later in the Russian campaign volunteers came from many European countries. The Waffen SS thereby became the first pan European army. This book first published in 1973 is the definitive pictorial record of the Waffen SS embracing all 38 divisions and the close co-operation with Wehrmacht, Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine. With more than 1,000 photos from the private collections of the veterans. These photos speak for themselves for they are realistic and truthful.
