Germany's Tiger Tanks - Volume I DW to Tiger 1 Design, Production and Modifications
This first volume, of a three-volume set (the first two volumes have already been published and are available), covers the history, development and production history of the Tiger tank variants from the idea's conception to the end of Tiger I production. This includes details on the development series known as the D.W., VK 30.01(H), VK 30.01(P), VK 36.01(H), VK 45.01(P) as well as the Tiger I. All of this illustrated with scale drawings by Hilary L. Doyle, combined with drawings, sketches, and photogrpahs depicting external modifications as well as internal views. Over thirty years of intensive research went into finding the original documents needed to create this history of the development, characteristics, and tactical capabilities of the Tiger.
The most authoritative technical reference on the Tiger I. Working from German sources, the authors trace the development of the vehicle and the many detail changes made during its production. The emphasis is entirely on technical matters: combat history of the Tigers is covered in another book, with a similar Tiger II book making up the trilogy. (To round out the picture, the authors are working on Panzer Tracts issues about the VK 30001 and VK 3601 progenitor vehicles.) The excellent but little-known Turret Reference Manual is used as a source of diagrams for turret fittings, inside and out. One diagram gives the stowage points for turret equipment around the time of chassis number 390, making it possible for modellers to build Mid Tigers with accurate interiors.
