Karl Doenitz Memoirs: Ten Years and Twenty Days

A fascinating insight into the life of the man who eventually succeeded Hitler in the last days of the Third Reich. The 10 years in the title refers to Doenitz's years of command: commander 1st U-Boat flotilla, 1935-39; rear admiral, 1939; vice admiral 1940; C-in-C of the German Navy in 1943-45. Hitler named Doenitz as Head of State in his last will and testament. For 20 days, Doenitz was President of Germany, then arrested by the Allies, and faced war crimes charges at Nuremberg. It was Doenitz who developed the U-boat wolf-pack attack tactic during WWII. Admiral Doenitz discusses, among other topics, U-boats in World War I, U-boat building policy from 1935-1939, the conduct of the U-boat war during World War II, his tasks as commander-in-chief from 1943-1945, and his role as head of the German government after Hitler's death.
