this book expands on Knappe's previous account (Soldat) of his experiences in combat during three tours on the Eastern Front and the Russian assault on Berlin, as a communications officer in the Fuhrerbunker during the
last days of the war and five years spent in various Soviet POW camps. Major Knappe goes into more detail about his combat experiences and provides further insight in to the inner workings of the Wehrmacht and the situation in the bunker. Shocked and dejected at what he witnessed in the bunker,Knappe at one point decided to shoot Hitler but changed his mind.
