The book tells the individual stories of 18 of the million or so soldiers and sailors who served in the armed forces of the United States during the American Civil War.

Among the individuals are an infantry private at the siege of Vicksburg, an engineer officer aboard an armoured steamboat, a sergeant of cavalry during the Gettysburg campaign & a surgeon in an artillery regiment.
